It's something I've wanted to do for as long as I've been reading myths. Q: Can you talk a little about your next project, which explores Norse mythology?Ī: I am getting ready to launch into that right after I finish the Heroes of Olympus series. It's its own thing and I let it be, so I really can't comment. Q: What's your involvement in the Percy Jackson movies?Ī: I am not involved in that at all so I cannot really talk about it. Some of these characters are 3,000 years old, but we can still understand why they do what they do even when we don't agree with their reasons. They explore friendship, loyalty, bravery, patriotism, what do those things mean? And the heroes are very human. I think these stories have been with us for so long because they explore universal themes. It's such an endless source of cool stuff. And here I am, having written three books on Egypt, nine now on Greek mythology, and I'm still finding more gods and monsters and story lines that I didn't know about from the ancient sources. The more I get into it, the more I discover. I thought that would cover Greek mythology and I couldn't have been more wrong. I originally did five Percy Jackson books. Q: Can you talk about your broader inspiration for the two series?Ī: The deeper I go into mythology, the more I find. It's just a question of which books I'll get to, so I hope so. I have more ideas than I'll ever be able to write in five lifetimes.

Q: Do you see a Percy-Carter series in the future?Ī: I would love to do that, but I don't know. Hopefully I'll get to explore this dynamic more in a longer form someday. My only regret is that it's a short story and not longer. Q: How do you think readers will respond to the dynamic?Ī: Well, I hope they have as much fun reading as I had writing it! They just really took off together and the story had a life of its own. It was fascinating for me to throw the two of them together from two very different worlds and see what happens. It's really about them learning to trust each other and learning to work together.
They don't seem like a very good team at first, but they do have more in common than you might think. Percy is kind of impetuous and sarcastic and Carter is very thoughtful and reserved, so when they get together at first it's like oil and water. How do you see them interacting?Ī: Carter and Percy are as different as two heroes can get. The two don't really start on the best terms. The cover captures Carter and Percy at their first meeting and I think it speaks for itself when you see it.
So, without giving too much away, you can expect some major crocodile action in this book. Q: What's the significance of the story's title?Ī: Sobek is the crocodile god from Egypt, and the son of Sobek would be one of this followers. The fans wanted to see a crossover, and I thought, "Let's see what happens!" It's something the fans have been asking me to do for a long, long time, and this just seemed like a great opportunity to do that.
